Okay, so my CD player is on the fritz (the cassette player started eating tapes last summer, now the CD lid won't stay shut

Hubby has one of those.  LOVES it.  He started out with a I-Pod shuffle, hated it.
I have a lower end version of the Sandisk and I like it, still a sandisk but only 2g memory and less gadgets.

And, if it helps..... electronics baffle me.  I still have a tape/CD player that works..... that's about as far as I got until hubby bought me the mp3, still figuring it out ;)

The Fuze looks nice, but don't bother with "refurbished" units.
It's not much more for a brand new one.

TigerDirect (dot com) has one for $40 new.
Plus they've got a ton more, and you can select by size, features, price, etc.

I've got two old Creative Zen players (1gb) that work just fine.
Always preferred the solid state ones to the ones with mini hard disks (less to break, more durable in the long run)

Good luck - I'm sure you'll find something you like,

I have the particular model of Sansa and I've been nothing but pleased with it. It does audiobooks, podcasts, music and even video, though why one would watch video on a screen that size, I'm not sure. You can pick up a new Fuze for under $60 so don't bother with a refurbished unit. Sansa treats their customers very well and the Fuze will work with your OS. It works with Linux, which is my OS, so it'll be fine. Sansa has very good customer service and replaced my unit, at no charge when it bricked. It's very user friendly and worth the money. You can expand the storage amount with a mini SD card as well, so it's not restrained to the 4 gb of space it has out of the box.

Thanks for the input.  KDbeads, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who is still clinging to CD and tape players. :D ,  read a book, etc. would be nice to have without always packing yet one more large bag to take along).  Is 8 GB really enough to take advantage of one?  Do you have to pay a monthly fee with those to access the wi-fi?  Oh, and I read you could get a VoIP service on it for cheap.  Seeing as how I don't have a cell phone, that might be nice.  But I'm skeptical that all these cool features really work on one of this tiny little things.

Thanks again for any and all help on this matter.

What you need to recognize is that the iPod Touch is SO much more than just a music player. I have owned almost every version of iPod over the last 7ish years and they've all been good but the Touch is a quantum leap. It plays video, links to all your favourite social networking sites, give you pretty unlimited Internet capability via WiFi, is an effective gaming device, and so on. I would say that I use my Touch over my PC for about 90% of my Internet needs. No kidding. It's the best, most convenient mist pleasurable gadget I have ever owned. I lost it for a week and I was inconsolable. It's always on and lovely interface are just a joy to use and due to its size it goes everywhere with me. Go on, you know you're worth it!
PS, I don't work for Apple!!

If you want to be modern, get something centered around apps like the iTouch or those Google things. If a simple mp3 player is all you want, then I think the sandisk is ok.

Agreed.

My Droid does all that and more... plus it's a phone ;-)
I've got 8 gigs of storage, e-reader, weather, email, social apps, etc.
Plus there are free services that allow you to upload your mp3 library to a server, then play on your Android device.
So, no storage limitations either (I'm in the cloud!)

TigerDirect sells both new and refurb.  For mp3 players, there's no good reason to buy refurb - the new ones are cheap enough.

Ok... Some mp3 players (ipod, etc) have a small hard disk (40 gig or more).  IMHO, that's more moving parts and a greater chance of breaking.  Solid state has no moving parts (most mp3 players 8 gig and under are solid state).  Very durable.  No problem running, biking, etc with them.

As for e-readers, I'd still go with a Kindle.  The e-ink format is unbeatable for battery life and viewing comfort (even in full sunlight).

oh... and thorwhatever, for a first post, this sounds suspect.  You may not get a paycheck from Apple, but it's evident you work for them (apple fans - don't get me started!)

Choices, choices...

Yeah, nothing perverted about the sex act.

Heretical Rants

Of the three mp3 players I´ve had in the last two years two of them broke with only moderate use, so a few months ago I got a slightly more expensive model(a Sony Walkman, omg nostalgia) and paid the extra ten bucks for a good year long replacement policy.  I won´t touch anything from Apple and don´t need any fancy apps, this works very well, has most of the features that I want, and it hasn´t broken yet... Plus it only cost half as much as the equivilant Apple iPod.

The ones that run on AAA batteries are really handy because you don´t have to worry about the battery charge, just keep a couple spares handy. They´re becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, however.

Another thing to consider is that it is quite easy to fill up the memory very fast, especially if you´re using audiobooks, so you might actually need more memory than you think you do.

Also, if the mp3 player comes with headphones, there is a very good chance that they are really terrible and uncomfortable to the extreme.  Don´t worry about this, there were only about $2 of the bill.
